Whether you’re outside and active or just sprawled out on the grass soaking up the sun, the summer months offer a myriad of endless possibilities. To honour Summer 2012, we have created this special “play” list showcasing some fun and games these magical months inspire.
Selected shorts include: A 16-year-old boy dreams of being special in Superhero Wannabe, directed by Patricia Harris Seeley; businessmen try escaping technology by going fly fishing in Sandra Sawatzky’s Belly Boat Hustle; in The Legend of Beaver Dam by Jerome Sable, Danny’s worst fears are realized when a campfire song summons the deadly Stumpy Sam; seven slap-happy sailors suntan in Guy Maddin’s Sissy Boy Slap Party; in Umbrella, by Michael Vass, an absurd request spurs a debate about what it means to help another person; a tennis court confrontation forces a father and son to look inward in Cam Christiansen’s I Have Seen the Future; X-ing by Michael Naphan tells the story of a hilarious clash between two groups of best friends on a stretch of lonely northern Canadian highway; and a man finds himself in an alternate universe during a summer afternoon in Simon Ennis’ Up In Cottage Country.
